UNITY DAY 2012 WAS FANTASTIC!

Click here to see the Unity Day slideshow. Video clips coming soon

group singingUnity Day began with the early arrival of many alumnae eager to see what the day had in store. Next, WHSAA members were treated to a Continental breakfast. This was followed by an alumnae processional whereby when we all walked down the isles to a packed auditorium of cheering students. Each group was led by a large red and black sign representing the decade in which they graduated.

An assembly followed which included a speech by former Principal Sandra Wighton and several dance performances by the students. "Sounds Unlimited" paid tribute to Whitney Houston by singing several of her songsd

At one point in the program a member of the WHS Robotics team, known as the RoboDoves, brought out the robot they had entered into 2012 VEX Robotics High School World Championship.

The program ended with, of course, the singing of the Farewell Song. Everyone in the audience raised their programs high as the swayed back and forth in singing a song none of could ever forget. A great time was had by all.

After the assembly, some WHSAA members went into classrooms to speak with students while others members toured the school. All of this was followed by luncheon the library. Finally all attending the luncheon stood for a group portrait. This brought a wonderful day to a close!

If you missed out this time plan not to miss next year. Become a member of the WHSAA now so you can attend all events on Unity Day, not just the assembly.

MESSAGE FROM THE WHSAA PRESIDENT

Greetings Western Sisters and Friends

On July 1, 2011 the new fiscal year began for the Western High School Alumnae Association, Inc. (WHSAA, Inc.). During this fiscal year we will continue to focus on TRADITIONS. Our Unity Month 2011 theme was “Our History is Our Strength” and we haven chosen to expound on that in preparation for our upcoming All Years Reunion. As a result of a brief poll, our All Years Reunion and ongoing theme for the year will be “Our History is Our Strength: Celebrating & Embracing Quiet Dignity."

I would like for each and every alumnae to reminisce about their days at Western and recall any TRADITIONS that existed at that time. How will the current students learn Western traditions? Who could do it better than ALUMNAE. I challenge all alumnae to visit and volunteer at Western High School frequently, support the efforts of the school’s various clubs and teams, as well as participate in WHSAA, Inc. activities. LARGE GROUP OF ALUMNAE TURN OUT FOR GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

June 15, 2011 - The general memberhsip meeting was held tonight at Western. Approximately 40 former students from the classes of 1973 through 2009 came out to find out what the Association was doing. They came to vent, offer suggestions, as well as ideas and opinions on where and what Western should be in the years to come.

This was our largest turnout in many, many months. For the first time in a long time the members of the Executive Board and committee chairs got a chance to hear what was on the minds of many of those who still hold Western dear.

Another meeting is planned to happen soon so that we can hear more and learn more and also harness the energy that filled the room tonight. Overall it was positive, I think, because we all have the same goal in mind - to keep Western alive so it can continue to have a positive and powerful infuence on young girls.

If you have any suggestions about what the WHSAA can do or what you can do to help Western, please contact anyone on the Executive Board or contact a committee chair. Find our contact information here.

A CLASS OF 1917 DIPLOMA IS DONATED TO THE WHSAA ARCHIVES

June 11, 2011 - Thanks to the kindness of a man named Pierce Bates the WHSAA received a 1917 diploma that belonged to a friend of his grandmother's. Despite the fact that his grandmother did not go to Western he realized the historical value of the document and instead of tossing it he contacted the WHSAA.

The Westernite's name that appears on the diploma is Amy Prescott Allison. The date is dated June 18, 1917. A photograph of the diploma is forthcoming.
